Open Art Week (WAO) is an international cooperation project in support of creative and independent industries.
WAO is a week of multidisciplinary art, based on exchange - artists, creative activities and productions - between independent art spaces from different cities across the world.
Open Art Week includes the participation of cinema, theaters, galleries, art centers, workshops, museums,
collectives ... which each year contribute to the creation of a program open to significant and innovative practices, disciplines and cultures of our times.
Organized on an annual basis, WAO includes a new city in each edition, to promote the free movement of ideas and creative projects; to implement sustainable internationalization of independent productions strategies; to promote local and international visibility of the participating spaces and the cities that host them.
The project was born in 2017 from the observation of the deep changes underway in the modalities of production, circulation and public relation with contemporary art in several Europeans and non-Europeans countries. In particular, the emergence of spaces and alternative collaborations to public institutions and profit-making companies, have contributed to the development of an important independent and cultural sector.
However, this increasingly large sector, is very heterogeneous, often fragmented and suffers from a
lack of resources, exchange opportunities and international visibility.
For the second edition, the Foundation played the role of coordinator at the local level, and ensured the implementation of project activities in Tunis by:
- Identifying and constituting a platform of local independent spaces.
- Identifying the Tunisian artists participating in WAO.
- Coordinating the development of the artistic program, according to the proposals of the participating art spaces and partners.
- Ensure an adequate documentation and communication of the event.
